this wolf may cry

nomi. keeps her debut short and soft, and it says more than most albums twice its length.

nomi. doesn't oversell anything. this wolf may cry runs 33 minutes, most of its songs are over before the three-minute mark, and almost none of them raise their voice. That restraint is the point, and on her first full-length album it mostly pays off.

She got here one release at a time. The North Carolina singer, songwriter and producer put out her first release, the three-song 09.30, in September 2025, then followed it with “raindance,” “cellophane,” “badman” and the sweet talk EP in April. By the time this album arrived, her team could point to support from Tyler, The Creator, Pharrell Williams, SZA, Kaytranada, Erykah Badu and Coco Gauff. On October 26, four days before release, she shared her COLORS performance of “r u?”

The circle around her stays small. nomi. is the only listed writer on most of these songs, Afolabi Osinulu co-produces six of them, and Brian Hammonds mixes most of the record, so it holds one sound from start to finish. That's a strength, and now and then a weakness.

“sweet talk,” the EP's title track, is the most grounded song early on. It's about being misread, about someone who has already decided who she is and her struggle to say otherwise. “right/left” is the sharpest idea here. She describes it as a song about “the man who can't figure out which way he's going,” with a simple moral: if he can't commit, he gets left behind. She calls it “playful and confident on the surface,” and that's exactly how it plays.

“what u want,” the July single, is the best song on the album. It's patient and a little nervous, a song about a crowded head and a promise to make things right, and her hesitant, unhurried delivery matches the uncertainty in the lyric. “ill be good 2 u” lasts 78 seconds and is one of the prettiest things here, drifting from a dream image into a plain, repeated promise to do right by someone.

“r u?” sits at the center of the album. It's a breakup that hasn't quite happened yet, with nomi. realizing she can't keep waiting on someone who won't choose her. The hook keeps circling one question: “Are you still deciding?” It's the No. 1 song in our Friday Rankings this week.

The back half is where the single mood starts to blur. “back seat” is the most physical song on the record, and “sirens” adds strings arranged by Troy Everett, but “sirens” and “some day” lean on atmosphere more than hooks. “digital dash” pulls it back into focus with a flirty dare.

Then “carry me” brings the album to a close with some of its most direct writing, a sleepless song about not knowing what comes next: “I hope this time it's where we meet.” For a record that spends so much of its time waiting on an answer, it's the right last word.

this wolf may cry isn't loud, and it isn't trying to be. It's a debut from someone who already knows what her voice is for.
